I learned how to make a side border in this lesson.
A transparent gif is an invisible image that is
inserted into the code which determines the space
between the border and the body of the page. The
space can be controlled by changing the size of the
transparent image.
If the gif was not used, the words and graphics
would run over the top of the border. You can
see an example of that here.
